Firing Squad Interview
Another quick interview at Firing Squad. A mix of questions about HALO and GEARS.
I think all the recent attention is because of my online presence, GEARS OF WAR being released soon, and that other thing I'm working on...HALO: something something.
Here's an excessively off topic question: Are there any plans (and if so, when) to update the front page's extra's (the wrtiers corner, upcoming events and downloads)?
...Is it just me, or did they spell your last name "Nyland" through the whole introductory paragraph?
Anyway. I see that Amazon.com was mentioned in there... Have you ever checked Amazon.ca? For whatever reason, they have "Halo: Ghosts Of Onyx" as coming out October 31st (which is when Amazon.com says Ghosts Of Coral will be out), and they have Ghosts Of Coral coming out in 2007. Is that just bad information on their part? I realize you have restrictions on what you can and cannot say, so if it's not just bad information, just "no" will do.
Also I would like to let you know your'e doing an excellent job hyping that unknown project. "It's going to be amazingly cool" is enough to drive people mad. ;D
It boggles my mind that you were surprised by how well the novel did - I mean, I understand why that happened, and how Halo fandom hadn't hit its peak at that point, so there would've been no telling, but... heh, I guess it's true that with truly great work, it's hard to pick out whether or not it will be popular before it even hits shelves.
Yeah, some people slam Dietz for The Flood, and wrongly so. But, in their defense, it's just so hard to go from the type of storytelling that you were engaging us with into what he had to write - it was just like going from a Star Wars space-battle scene with lots of fast action, near-misses with lasers, and explosions, to an overdramatized documentary on the mating rituals of the south american sea crab or something. :P What a contrast.
Anywho. Thanks for all the interviews! I don't know about the rest of the fans, but I've been wanting to hear more from you outside of the pages of a novel ever since I finished the Fall of Reach. I was like "Man, what must it be like to speak with this person? He seems like the ideal blend of life experience, creativity, and spheres of interests for someone with interests like my own. And he knows just how to write stuff so that it drives me nuts with suspense and anticipation as I read it."
Heh, and all I gotta say is, you have yet to disappoint! Keep on rockin', Mr. Nylund.
Speaking of interviews, i'd like to set one up, as well as 99 other friends i have, all who have the exact same questions for you which we will all ask repeatedly.
Dietz' style is different from your's, although when i read it I really liked the scenes that were done from the Covenant perspective. I think it really defined who the Covenant were, not just this badass race going to kill all of humanity. They are ten times more so.
Still, i was annoyed when reading it an noting different scenes where the actual wording is different from the game than is read in the book. I'd read a part that would say one thing, but remember hearing something else. But that's just me.
Now the only question that remains is whether this next halo novel is going to be based on Halo 2 like the Flood to Halo 1, or if it'll be a different story entirely. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Eric Nylund: It was a deliberate choice. There wasn’t the creative freedom on that project as there was on FALL OF REACH. Bill Ditz did a fine job, I think, but some HALO fans really slam that book—half of them complaining it’s just like the game, and the other half complaining about the bits he added that weren’t in the game! It was a no-win situation for any writer.
Yeah I found the book tedious to read at times, and it wasn't the authors fault at all. He's very talented, its just very hard to read (and especially write)a story with such creative restrictions with a rehashed plot that everyone is fairly to very well informed/versed in.
Parish, man, good luck with that question, I asked it like a month or two ago on here.
David--yep last name is misspelled in the intro paragraph. No big deal. Happens all the time to me. Also, all your novel questions will probably be answered by Bungie’s latest news item.
Angel—I’m still surprised that so many people like what I write.
S_B—interview is fine, but we should wait a few weeks.

Lots of interviews lately? Is this how it always is for you, or just recently?

Sweetness.
Big fan of your Halo Novels. Along with both sons, my wife, brother in law and friends. I AM looking forward to your next Halo work, and Gears.

Kalroy--thanks!
SB-- yes, I plan on adding content to the front page extras as soon as I get a free moment ;) ...hopefully before the next HALO novel comes out.
