GHOSTS OF ONYX

Bungie announced the release date of the next novel—HALO: GHOSTS OF ONYX.

Over the next few days Tor and Bungie will be coordinating how to best release the details (and perhaps the cover art) so please don’t ask me to spill the beans.

Thanks.

Are you able to answer why Tor was switched to? I'm just kinda curious, is all.

Sorry angel. I'm not allowed to talk about the details of MS Licensing’s deals. Hope you understand.

Ah. Indeed I do. Oh well; the only stupid question is the one that you already know the answer to, right? =P

How much would you say that you enjoyed writing this Halo novel in comparison with how much you enjoyed writing the other two?

So what's the story about? And what can we expect in it? How about the ending, what happens then? [/sarcasm]

Seriously though, I am now intrigued by the title. 'Ghosts of Coral' seemed too Halo-ey to me, with the few things about Coral already mentioned. Onyx has a much more mythilogical background, and certainly less people know about that. So now i'm really wondering what's up with Onyx, but hey, just another 2 months...

S_B – funny.

Angel—Re: fun writing. On the plus side, I’ve had the most interaction with Bungie on this novel—from initial ideas to outline to final look at the proof pages. On the negative side, there are so many things happening in the HALO universe, it all had to be carefully aligned to make a cohesive story. Keeping track of the continuity was a real challenge.

Thank you for using your gift at writing to further an excellent narrative and community. Your writing rocks and builds the sinews of a thriving entity that has the same elements of a family!

Might I say again that your writing rocks?

I can't wait for this book. Looking forward to reading it!

And while I'm on the subject of reading your books, I really need to get out there and get A Signal Shattered (pardon if I messed up the title, that's from memory)... Signal to Noise remains my favorite sci-fi book ever, so it would follow that I should read the sequel...

Anywho, glad to see this come into fruition!

Definitely looking forward to this release. I didn't begin reading the Halo novels until a good bit after they were all released, but this will definitely be a first-day purchase.

Any chance you can tell us whether or not you'll be writing the next two novels, as well?

Can't wait for GoO, but I'll probably end up getting it a month after it comes out in the US.

Blame stupid Aussie bookstores :(

GoO...never thought of it that way. I wish i could have a book as the acronym Goo...Something to definately put on a resume.

Thanks everyone.

GOO -- yeah we thought of that. :)

David -- sorry, no comment on the next two HALO books. As usual, Bungie controls the release of that information.

Fans of the Halo novels and followers of Nylund's fiction probably already saw the leak of the book's production title, "Ghosts of Coral."

Any significance behind the title change from coral to onyx, or did they just do it to hold onto that sense of "ha we fooled you", always one step ahead of their fans? o_0

Nah, there's definately significance to Onyx. Though i'm sure everyone got a nice 10 second laugh at saying...wait, no they didn't! The working title was "Ghosts of Coral." It wasn't a joke.

Unless Eric fooled us all...

Hey Eric,

Love your books, i hook on them at once just after the very first chapter of Fall of Reach, 24 hours later it done!
Anyway
There is news about Halo movie. Are you involved in anyway with writing the script or they just create it base on the books?

Eric Nylund isn't involved in the Halo movie.

I'm a huge fan of yours, and I can't wait to check out Ghost Cor- Onyx...

I just have one question that's always been on me and my friend's minds. How much did you get to play Halo before writing the Fall of Reach, if at all? Are you an avid Halo player beyond whatever research you need to write your books.

The Halo Movie? Eric wrote it already. They've been working on it for a year already, and its due out this winter. Didn't you hear? [/sarcasm]

I think that eric could do it, but there are only so many hours of the day. And fighting that never leads to anything good. Time always wins.

Blogger Falcon117 said...

No I didn't hear from Eric, no i can't find anywhere that say he working on it. And no it ain't due this winter either (I am sarcastic like you but I am also a skeptic so I would believe you if you point me to more sources other than guesses)

From what I heard, Peter Jackson help with the project but not direct the movie. I don't like Holywood guys messing around with a great story like this since I see them kill so many others that I like (House of the Dead, Alien Vs Predator, Alone in the Dark...and others, but DOOM broke my heart forever!!!) Not good enough for Hollywood and not good for gamers either, They all suck, period.

I hope with Eric involvement, at least the movie stay true to to whole story, so I am pretty glad to know that Peter Jackson is part of the process.

Fred-104, S_B – the working title was picked for a reason as was the final title. No joking around :)

Falcon117—regrettably I am not involved in the HALO movie, nor have I seen the script. Your guesses on what will be in it are as good as mine.

Shortroundmcfly – man, that was a long time ago...but I seem to recall that there were prerelease builds available for MGS people to play.

I can't tell you how excited I am by this news! November can't arrive soon enough. Having never played the game I was intrigued by the movie announcement and decided to get some information about the backstory. I read the premise for 'fall of reach' and purchased the halo books a few minutes later ;-)

Honestly I have never read books that fast. I simply couldn't stop reading, with the fall of reach and first strike being my favorites. I'm actually sitting here at work and feeling like a kid awaiting some amazing birthday gift I know I'm about to receive.

Thanks a lot Eric and since I read the halo books I have pretty much ordered your entire bibliography.

I just wanted to know if the spartans in the end of First Strike(Fred,Will, and Linda) are in the Ghost of Onyx because they didn´t end up showing on Halo 2 game

Blogger Falcon117 said...

Spartan-117, I wish you didn't ask that question!~!!! That is one of the question we all know Eric won't answer nor anyone willing to answer if they know or want to know before the book come out. However it give us idea that may just ruin the plot for the book!!!

Leifur – thanks! Iceland—wow. Is the country as amazing a place as everyone says it is?

Rs9900—thanks, but “godhood” is a little lofty to try and live up to. : )

Spartan-117 – Okay I give up I’ll tell you. What Fred, Linda and Will are doing is...Oh, wait.... Thanks falcon; I almost blew it!

I was wondering...what font did you use for the 'interface' headers in both FoR and FS? It seems like a version of Impact, but the spacing is definitely different...as is the parenthesis style.

Hope that's not too personal a question. Don't want to be pressuring you into revealing any trade secrets, neh?
