Thanks for the GL, Eric...I'll need it!

I had a story pretty much all ready to go, but then UNSCDF posted a max word count rule of 12K words. Mine was more than 50K. They..."Aren't looking for a novel."

Oh well.

I'm submitting a new one that I just created about a week ago. I hope I finish it in time. I'll be sure to not enter in a novel.

It's not that we think an entry above 12,000 words won't be good -- it's just that reading through 30+ entries that are at or above the 12K mark would become extremely daunting. And then they'd have to be passed along to Eric to read over as well.

Fact is, we just thought that reading through entries above 12K words would simply take too long.

In fact, because of entries that we have now that are quite large, we're taking in a few more Staff members for just the initial screening! Originally we thought just two of us could do it, but with these large entries... who knows?

30+? You've not gotten any more than that? Better yet, you're not expecting more than that?

Let's see if I can navigate these hurdles school keeps throwing in my way that have thusfar prevented my getting started on this thing so that I can hopefully snag me a copy of what will surely become one of my fav novels, signed by one of my fav authors.
:)

Stupid school. Needs to leave me alone so that I can do those things which REALLY matter.

major silva,

Now I can understand the 12K rule being that you might not have enough people to read everything and then there's Eric. Yeah, I'd feel bad for him trying to read through 30+ novels. Hehe. No worries.

Sir_Brilliant,

Yeah, submission count is horribly low for some reason... even when we shortened the minimum length, specified a lot of things, and even told people they can send in as many submissions as they liked. Our only "regulations" was pretty much that it had to be "new work".

People even sent us work they did last year, even though we specifically said that if they did that.. their submission would not be accepted. Too bad for them I guess :O.

I'm actually really dissapointed in submission numbers... we had expected 50+ minimum :(.

major silva,

How much farther past 12K are you all willing to go?

Eric,

Really looking forward to GoO whether I win it or not. I know it's gonna be gravy.

major silva, no need to worry.
When I participated in Harvard College Summit for Young Leaders in China, the organizer of the summit told us that a week before the deadline, merely 100+ applications arrived, but during the last week, 900+ came. There are too many people who send their work on the last minute.

Agreed. Last minute work (for many people) tends to be the best. But i go no farther than that.

Kids, don't wait till the last minute.

Electromative Force,

Humm... well, let's say about 6,000 more words past 12K for you. Still will be hard to push past all of these large entries, but luckily we have until the 30th to do so (REALLY glad we all decided on 30th-Nov 1 to announce the winners!).

Danny,

Good to hear, hopefully that will happen here! Although, we are starting to receive more submissions daily.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to this. I'm on staff with UNSCDF and I'm going to help do some of the judging, and I look forward to reading some quality work. As an aspiring writer myself, I try to read as much as I can, both works by established authors, and us budding authors.

Cool. Judging from the amount of fanfic I've seen in some places, you will certainly have some quality.
