Happy and Grateful
It has been one heck of a week!
GEARS OF WAR released (amazing reviews--and yes it does live up to the hype--nice job EPIC!), my birthday is this weekend...and the preliminary sales figures are in on GHOSTS.
HALO: GHOSTS OF ONYX will debut at #13 on the NEW YORK TIMES paperback bestsellers list, joining the literati cast of James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Robert Ludlum, and Janet Evanovich (for the week of 11/19 in the NYT Book Review).
It also will be #2 on the Barnes and Noble Bestsellers list next week; I am waiting for confirmation on the Publisher’s Weekly list (it’s either #2 or #6), and #24 on the USA Today list (combined hard/softcover, fiction/non-fiction).
It’s still being researched, but this may be the first time a novel based on a video game has hit the NYT printed bestsellers list. (!?)
A few more details and a mini interview is up on the current Bungie.net weekly update.
I’m grateful to everyone who has read my novels. You have my sincere thanks.
A writer couldn’t ask for (or get) a better birthday gift!

Sounds great. Happy birthday!
Wow. Amazing indeed. Bestseller's lists--just goes to show.
Happy birthday as well, Eric. Hopefully, you'll get more birthday gifts like this to come in the coming years as more novels get slated to you!
Fantastic job, BTW with GHOSTs. So many people and events to keep track of. I'm almost done reading it and it's quite an adventure.
Take care.
Jeff
ARGH!
The least Bungie could've done was give a spoiler warning in that interview - thankfully, all I saw was "Kurt" and "last line". Could've been worse. :/
Anyway, great to see Ghosts is selling well and you're getting good feedback.
Happy Birthday!
Well, Mr. Nylund, I'm not a bit surprised. Whether or not a book is based on a game is irrelevant. What matters is the writing, and you have that skill in spades. Your fiction has drawn me into the world of Halo like nothing ever has. Halo was a great game to be sure, (I didn't even start playing it until after H2 came out), but still just a game. When my nephew-in-law suggested I read his Halo books, I raised my eyebrows a bit. I had never been able to get into books based on other properties, such as Star Wars or Star Trek, as the writing always struck me as a bit sub-par. Your Halo novels really made the game come alive to me, and I consider the Halo mythology in total to be more enjoyable than almost any other sci-fi I've ever experienced.
Sorry about writing a book in your comments section, but there you have it. Enjoy the success! You've earned it!
...And have a great birthday as well!
Yes, happy birthday/Emergence Day indeed, Eric!
I haven't really gotten that far into GHOSTS yet though. Other things have come up, and I haven't been reading it that much -- only in bed really. Not trying to say GoO puts me to sleep though, but reading in general in bed does.
Great to hear it's getting the praise it deserves!
That's all great news! We hope the weather isn't getting you guys too bad over there. North Bend seems to be on the news a lot here. Have a Happy Birthday!!
Hey Eric,
Happy Birthday!
It is the best gift when you earn it it yourself for your own birthday.
When all the info come in, can you list the all Top-selling list? I love to see how this epic stand against other books on the list. Writer like you help bring a new universe to the video game and turn it into an epic that soon has to be recognized as a new modern art of our generation.
Congratulation on all your success. Now don't slack off on the Mortal Coils!!!! =) Fans like us need them like drug now...
Heck of a week indeed. Gears is awesome. I can't freakin put it down....
Happy Birthday man.
BTW, how's Mortal Coils comin along? Any idea when it will be completed and available?
Yahooo, Eric! :)
See you tomorrow.
So, on a scale of one to ten, what do you rate your money rolling sessions, and car washing by Salma Hayek and Jessica Simpson?
Haha, amazing - I'm kinda excited I have a first edition now (It possibly being a historal book)
Whoo-hoo! Way to go, Babe!
Thanks everyone for the happy bestseller and birthday wishes.
Nikoda—so far were high and dry on our mountainside! Lots of flooding in the valleys, however.
Falcon117, Kilroy—I’m getting back to work on Mortal Coils right after this :)
Syne-- ;}
I think the book has done better than some of the reports. I did not get my book until yesterday due to the fact that the bookstores I went to were not in a hurry to open up their shipments for some reason they kept telling me they had boxes in the back but just hadn't gotten around ot them. I'm about half way through the book and love it. Thanks Mr. Nylund!
Eric,
Now that you are a famous writer! Soon you will ranked with Stephen King, Michael Crichton (I don't like Crichton works at all, mostly fiction than science!!!) Do you consider doing any book tour soon? Especially around Southern California, near Disneyland (in Anaheim)?
If you do please let your fans know so I can get all your books signed - think of the value of Game of Universe with original signature by you !!!
I loved your books, Signal to Noise and A Signal Shattered, their my two favorite books of all time.
And to think, I read them just because I liked your writing style in the Halo novels!
<3
Congratulations on all your success, I can't say its unexpected considering the quality of your work.
I'm getting a little upset with amazon since I pre-ordered ghosts with the most expensive shipping option, total around 60$(I'm a fan!), and I still haven't received it. Maybe shipping to Iceland is done by some troller stuck in the perils of the the north atlantic ocean. Tracking tells me the package has left the United states at least ;-)
I have a question though, have you ever read the Icelandic sagas?
Thanks again everyone for the kind words.
Falcon—no signings planned in my future regrettably. Too many business trips in the next two months. Microsoft keeps me very busy!
Leifur – holy smokes! That’s expensive. Makes me wish TOR would put out an e-book version. I’ve read some of the Kings’ Sagas, but not yet Njals or any of the other Icelandic Sagas...which are on my very long “to-read” list.
Ghosts is a fantastic addition to the Halo universe and deserves all of the attention that it is getting.
I know it's kinda off-topic...but....OMG! Halo 3 Beta!
Happy Birthday Halo!
I just beat Gears of War, and I noticed your name in the credits. I thought "Nah, is it the same Eric Nylund?"
Great work! I look forward to your next Halo novel.
First off, I have to thank you for personally renewing my love of books back when you did The Fall of Reach.
Second, I have to say that Ghosts of Onyx is one of the best pieces I've ever read. The story, the action, the characters; it's all written so wonderfully. I've barely been able to put it down since I bought it 2 days ago. I would have finished it in a single night if I had enough time.
And along with everyone else here, happy birthday from a fan that can't wait for you next work!
Great books Eric! Keep up the great work and Happy Birthday!
Somehow, I thought that I had already wished you a very happy birthday. But I cannot find such a post on this website.
My sincere apologies. That said...
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!!
May you have many, many more, and may your desire to share your stories with us, the rest of the world, stay with you until you die a crotchety old man in your sleep.
You're only as old as you feel. :)
Thanks for your work on GoW, it was awesome!
Eric, I've got to say that after finishing reading Ghosts of Onyx today, this book is certainly one of the best books I've read in a very long time. The dedication to detail, emotional attachment to characters, and the roller coaster ups and downs you face at the end of one chapter only to move off to another branch of the overall storyline is just breathtaking to me and kept me rooted to my seat not wanting to stop reading for anything! Probably the most emotionally driving point of the book for me was the entire SPARTAN III project itself, and those associated with it, especially the new SPARTANs themselves. There's a strange madness to it... you can't help but sympathize for them and how they never were really able to experience innocence. There's more to it than merely saying "they had to grow up fast" because they were never given a chance to grow up and experience the simplicities of life. I hope you understand what I mean. I could definately visualize certain parts of the story as I was reading the novel and specific parts (especially the final siege on Onyx with the Spartans) were masterfully written and made me think "this would be a perfect scene for the movie!" Your work on GoO has just been an inspiration to me and I'm definately looking forward to reading the next chapter of the Halo series from you in the future! I don't think I can sing praises enough for how great this book is :D
Happy belated birthday from Indiana. Here North Vernon is down south and South Bend up north but a happy birthday is still a happy birthday! I have just ordered Ghosts of Onyx and coincidentaly just beaten Gears of War on insane (ok so maybe it was set on casual..) It certainly is a great game! Lets hope in coming weeks you crack the top ten on the New York Times list and then we won't have to debate whether or not its a first for gaming. Judging by the content and quality of your previous offerings I doubt very much that such an event is not in your future! Congrats!
Hello Eric, I'm another big fan of your work. I usually don't read video games novels, but I loved the way you did the Halo books. Great character development, tons of twists, and the no dry spots. It was wonderful to be able to learn that much more about the Halo Universe.
Thank you,
Andrew
