Quick Fix!

Many of you have sent email indicating that there were a few typos in GHOSTS OF ONYX. I’m not sure how this happened as there were two copyeditors on the project, but all I could offer before today was my apologies and add my frustration to yours.

This morning I got an email from Eric Raab (editor at TOR books) indicating that they are doing a rush reprint because the book is selling out!

I’m not asking anyone to spend any time editing, but several people have indicated they have already flagged errors and omissions in the text. If you have a chance before the end of the day, I would appreciate it if you could send me an email or post in the comments sections here.

Thanks to everyone.

I noticed an unusually high amount of typos compared to the previous set of Halo books. In fact, I think there's more in GoO than the previous three combined.

From now on, I'll write them down when I see them.

I recall reading yesterday "personal" instead of "personnel".

Damnit, I have the urge to help out...but i'm not even done with the book.

If anything, i know there's an error in the prologue where it says "though" instead of "through". If i get a chance, i'll look through it again to find out exactly where it is, but man, this is hell week for me.

I'll help out. Probably the most well known one must be the date at the beginning of one of the chapters. The one that says "15" year instead of "5". I'll post later today with the locations.

I don't know for sure that it was a typo but on pages 189-192 it mentions that Sanghelli, Unggoy, Lekgolo, & Jiralhanae are Elite names for the species. Yet, on page 237 it mentions that Huragok is a Forerunner word.

I want to help....grrr....I just really don't have the time. The only one I can remember was one time you said "USNC" instead of "UNSC." No idea what page. Sorry man.

On page 211, in Chapter 23, it says:

"The grenades had busted every crate and punched rents into the walls"

I'm sure it should be dents

Rents is correct actually. It is the past tense of rend, to make an opening or breach.

and Huragok is the Forerunner word for Engineer. Humans call them Servants or Engineers and the Convenant, namely the Uggoy refer to the Engineers by their Forerunner name, Huragok.

Hey Eric -- Jordan117 here.

Just got your signed copy today, and it's a beaut! It's a lot heftier and the design looks much sleeker than the others. I'll make sure to keep a look-out for typos when I start reading it tomorrow.

Thanks again for the inspiration and prizes!

I am not sure if you are still watching this space for more corrections but here is one....

On page 94, the first para..."Lucy was down from HIS tree as well"...I believe that should have been HER instead of his.

NS -- I'll make sure this gets in for the next round of corrections. Many thanks.

i'm not sure if this is a mistake, but i'm pretty sure it is, on page 17 it says, "his skin on his palms", i'm pretty sure it should be the skin on his palms.

Umm, I have more of a question/possible error.
When Colonel Ackerson is talking to Kurt, Kurt specifically says "Army" Colonel. Now, I'm pretty sure it's been said before that the UNSC doesn't have an Army, just "Naval" forces, hence "United Nations 'Space' Command." So, is this an Error, on your part or Bungie's part.

I was a bit confused about that myself. Now I know there are Colonels in the Marines.

The breakdown of every service's enlisted rank structure is different from one another.

But the only branch of military service to have traditionally different officer ranks is the Navy. The Marine Corp's officers have the same paygrade and title as the Air Force and Army. Although, in this futuristic storyline, there is only the Navy and the Marines, with their accompanying spec ops forces, the ODSTs and the clandestine Spartans.

One tiny other thing I wasn't sure of is that the Elites contintually adress higher-ups as "Sir". Maybe it's just for the reader's convenience, but I always thought the Covenant, much less, the Elites stayed away from that sort of speech. I always thought they'd use like "Your excellency" or "Master"...but whatev.

I was confused why on p.175, the answer to Halsey's question of when the drones appeared was, "The morning of Spetember twenty-first," when the date on chapter twelve (the date when the drones are first encountered) was October 31, 2552.

In fact, not a single chapter in the book takes place on September 21st, nor is there any other mentioning of that date within the book, as far as I've read. Maybe I'm just missing something here?

Dcase, Agentgrif--good catches. Thanks.
Aldiron, EMF--Ackerson _is_ an Army Colonel. There’s an interesting story there (the UNSC Army is not a happy place). I hope one day we get to tell it!

Yes. Yes. I hope you get to tell it too. I want to hear more about this. Sounds interesting.

I'm not sure if you still want to be informed of errors but on either page 60/90 something or 160/190 something, if i remember right, i beleive it read "Kurt had had to...." Repeating had twice.

Mr. Nylund,

Having just finished the book merely minutes ago, I have to ask whether or not there is a time limit for this submission of typos.

I'll be poring over each and every word of this text (again) ANYWAY, so to say that it would be convenient for me to make note of each typo would be an understatement.

Though, being as this is a previous blog entry, and I have an atrocious memory, if you'd like to get back to me via email rather than a reply-post, that would definitely be ideal for me.

Thanking you for your time,
~Angel

Just finished it and besides the typos, I have a question:

Whatever became of the AI the doctor brought with her? You made sure it escaped but that was the last time we heard of it, I imagine it would have been useful during the decoding of the forerunners writings, but instead she is only using her notebook?

I don't know if you are still reading the comments of this post but I found a rather important typo, probably the most important of all: Chapter 2, from pages 42-49 discusses the plans for the Spartan-III program and is dated Oct. 24, 2531. And Chapter 6 starts on page 67 and is dated Dec. 27, 2531 where Kurt is on Onyx six months after the beginning of his training of the Spartan-III's. Now how does six months (actually more because the training would not immediately start) happen between Oct. 24, 2531 and Dec. 27, 2531? Thanks for listening, and there was also many mispellings of "soldier," like "solider" in the book, thanks and it is an honour to help you.

Sorry, that previous comment about the date error was anonymous, I don't know why it was. My account is Lance_World if this one says it is anonymous too.

Again not sure if it's too late for these but anyway...

Haven't finished yet, and overall it's a good read so far. Still quite a few little errors, a lot of them inconsistencies with the dates and such:

Chapter 4, page 57: The events described took place on November 7th 2531, but in the text the UNSC frigate Tannenberg joined the search on 1/13/2535 (Over three years later), when the search only lasted three hundred and twenty two minutes.

Chapter 6, page 67: It says Kurt has spent six months developing the SPARTAN-III training program but according to the date it's only been thirteen days since he was told about it.

Final one I spotted, just a minor typo...
Chapter 8, page 87: The SPARTANS are firing their MA5K submachines guns at one point and then Shaune is described as using an MA5B.

Still all minor things, and just irritating to a pedant like me.
