Writing Questions

If you have a question about the business or the process of writing leave a message or send me an email. If I have a good answer I’ll post it (all of which will eventually be collected into a writing FAQ section on the website).

No HALO-related questions please. Bungie is the only one authorized to answer specific questions about their universe. Thanks.

Thank you! I told Shini about your offer of questions and I think he has something he wants to ask, but he just put in a six day work week and work will keep him away...16...hours or so today and another 14 tomorrow. Lame. Anyway, it's a really good question so I'll see if I can't get him to let me just post it or if he wants to wait until he has time on Monday.

Sounds neat. I'll give it a shot.
_________

1) Is it necessary to go to a school specifically for writing, or do you believe self-taught authors can make it just as big as those who went to school for it?

2) How many drafts of a piece do you normally go through until completion?
__________

Eh, it's all I can think of right now. If I think of any more I'll jet an email to you sometime. Nice idea, by the way!

I just thought of something else, though.

How much creative control do you have to give up to your editor/publisher, etc, especially as a new writer? I would venture to guess that the more proliferate types get free run of things, but until you prove yourself, are you more or less screwed creatively?

Yes, I do have a question.

I have heard through various sources that it is a good idea - in some cases it's made to sound like it's the only way you'll get anywhere - to read your favored genre voraciously. I am concerned that would lead to either loosing your natural voice or otherwise having it butchered in favor of an amalgam of what has recently been read.

So, is reading other books while working on a book or in the general vicinity of working on a book good or bad in your experience?

Lots of great questions. I've also received many e-mails -- some of which contain several great questions, too. I'll start posting answers in the order in which I received questions (one per customer to start with please).

As usual, if there’s some urgency-- like you just sold your first manuscript to a publisher and you don't know what to do next, send me an e-mail and I’ll do my best to answer quickly.

I want to know how you find your voice when writing, and how you organize information that you use to write from.

I am an aspiring author, but I am young so it is not necessary for me to work on getting anything published quite yet.
I have written a 300 page book called Halo: The Rise of the Covenant
I have recieved hundreds of comments that I should try to get it published. I know a lot of people have already asked you this in the past, but how can I contact bungie about this. I have heard how you feel about fan fiction, but I had to ask anyway.
Im not getting my hopes up, but I just want to know if there is a chance for a published fan-made Halo book.

I emailed a few of the chapters to you, but I didnt realize until now that you delete all messages with attachments...

Some quick questions.

1)How long would it normally take you to write A complete book?

2)How far do you go with your imagination? Like, how hard is it to think up the next sentence?

Hey Eric...

First... Thanks again for the email responses.

Second... When you write, do you find your characters leading a life of their own and guiding you through the story, or are they hardwired into a script that you do not vary from? I am working on a story, and I find that, and this might sound dumb, a couple of my characters are growing beyond their original scope that I planned. Aside from the obligatory psychotics jokes, is this something that is good to happen or bad? A close friend told me that it is good, that it means that the character is stronger than the story and I can make them last longer than one or two stories.

What is your opinion?

TIA.
