“Really” Done This Time...Again

A while ago I posted the “Mortal Coils Done” entry on this blog.

How foolish of me.

Of course, my editor had notes...so I still had a lot of work. For the last three weeks I’ve been heads down focused on doing just that. There were no major changes, a few things here or there—but a few minor changes especially changes to one of the main characters in a manuscript this size snowballed fast.

I’m not going to say I’m done this time...but I’m done for now.

Later, I’ll have to revisit any edits my editor wants changed; whip up a reading/study guide; polish that first audio interview about Mortal Coils (hope to release that soon after Christmas); cajole, bribe, and plead for cover quotes; go over the proof pages with a scanning electron microscope; and gear up the marketing campaign.

In my copious free time a have a few future “projects of interest” that are demanding my attention as well.

It’s good to be a busy writer. Very good.

Sorry if I’ve ignored emails and posts. I’ll be catching up shortly.

I've a coworker that makes an incredible chocolate mud pie. I could get her to whip you up a couple. If that doesn't garner you cover quotes, I don't know what will. ;o)

1sg -- send me an email (eric@ericnylund.net) and I'd be happy to send you a list of interviews that will help you gather material for your assignment.

Nikoda – thanks! I think, though, the pies wouldn’t get past _my_ kitchen :)

Philip – Thanks for the support, man. Much appreciated.

I'm looking forward to buying and reading Mortal Coils. Now, if only we could induce your publisher to send you on a signing tour...

How does one go about becoming an editor? Or for that matter a critic?
I'm pretty good at telling people what needs to be changed (if I know anything about the subject, from movies to books to games to products, etc.), and I _may_ have a certain talent there.

Part of me wants to make it a job I could get paid for, but another part of me wants to just help some rising talent that needs a bit of polishing here and there.
So my talent lies somewhere between hobby and job.

I'm in San Francisco, so I'd be happy with a West Coast tour!

I can answer you Ater. Generally, it requires a serious background in english studies, or whatever language you plan on editing in. That means major in English, and you'll have to get in lots of literature and literature history classes. On top of that, you'll need some experience in it, like editing articles for a newspaper or website.

For example, I'm actually doing a lot of editing for the web site I write for, and also love to practice on stuff my friends write. Once I've got more time, I'm going to start going around to smaller sites offering my services. However, I also trained under a professional editor/writer, so that was very helpful.

But what you need to do is just stay in school and study the subject, and get some work experience in it. You'll get better with more practice.

I just cant wait for Mortal Coils! the only thing i am worried about is that i might have placed it on a too high pedestal. the same thing happened with Halo 3.

oh, and good luck with the final polish.

something that came up in my mind during the never ending study hall. one of my favorite spartans of yours, will, i dont remember which book, im sure it was 3 or 4, it was describing the spartans, saying will had changed , that something important had been lost:[

WHAT?
:D

I'm going to go ahead and lay this on the table - Glasgow, Scotland. I could easily get 200+ showing up to your signing. That is, if you don't mind having an old, battered copy of First Strike in your hands. But don't you think the books with that kind of soul are the best of their un-battered brethren? ^_^

(oops, double post)
Poql - I think you're referring to First Strike. Will was always the joker of the team, keeping the morale up and having a laugh etc. Over the years, constant battle had hardened him and he never cracks jokes anymore. "Something special had been lost" At least, I think thats what Eric was getting at.

Mr. Nylund
I appreciate the hard work that you have done to provide me with genuine entertainment. Now you may not want to take the time to read this entire message but I have some words I would like to say. Mortal Coils from what I have read sounds to be a good book, I cant wait to read this one. I own the entire Halo collection and the Signal books. So from reading those I have high expectations of your next book, which you will no doubt surpass.

Jeremy—I might be taking a few field trips down to the bay area...so you never know.

Wdw zath- correct! About “what had been lost.” Scottland, huh? That would be wonderful, too.

R104d, Laban - thanks for the many kind words. I hope MORTAL COILS lives up to your expectations. I’ll be posting an audio interview about the book after the New Year.
