Mortal Coils ARC

Advanced reading copies of Mortal Coils arrived a few days ago. I let one sit on my bookshelf for two days, just staring at it...and then finally got up the nerve to crack it open...even to read a few lines.

Okay—all in order. I set it back down.

Yesterday, I read the opening. It was good.

I read a few spots at random. Still good.

Then I got sucked into the story—finally looking up again after an hour.

Whew. It all still works.

Now my editor and I get to send these out and start asking, begging, and blackmailing people for cover quotes.

I'd give a cover quote, but I don't think anyone would really care.

Kristine Smith has written that every time she opens up a new copy of her new book, she finds a previously-undiscovered typo. Has this ever happened to you?

Awesome. Now why isn't it in my hands yet, fresh out of a Barnes and Noble bag? >:|

dangerusdave --Appreciate the offer, but for now all the ARCs are already spoken for.

Jeremy—yes. Not a pleasant thing.

Angel—Alas, for non-HALO media-blockbuster extravaganzas a book usually takes a year (or more!) from the time it is turned in to hitting the shelves of you favorite book seller.

Wait, so you're saying we'll likely have to wait a year before we see Mortal Coils on shelves?
:(

laban--I get a dozen offers to collaborate a week. Regrettably, I cannot as I have deadlines and projects of my own to last me for decades.

stephen--The wheels of publishing turn _much_ slower for an author when the word "HALO" is not on the cover of your book. Not much we can do about it.

Cool! And I know those feelings. I still feel good about my first novel Star Dragon at that line level and have gotten sucked in. I think my new one, Spider Star, is better over all, but not as polished. I'm expecting to find some typos in the edition that was just published (the ARCs were uncorrected and have had them for six months), but not game to immediately jump in and do that.

I know this is off topic but I'm reading Ghosts of Onyx right now, and I noticed you using the name "Ambrose" and the location "Camp Currahee". Did you get these ideas from Steven E. Ambrose's Band of Brothers?

Oh, by the way, you're my all time favorite author. :] I'm a huge fan of your work and I hope to see more Halo books from you. You're amazing!

That's exciting! Will you be having any sort of book signing extravaganza when it comes out? I'll bring pie! Or maybe brownies. ;o)

Unrelated: This past Tuesday I flew home on flight 117 from O'Hare. I was amused.

Mike—Congrats again on the launch of SPIDER STAR. I’ve got my order in on Amazon!

|| echo419 || -- Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I’m a big fan of the Band of Brothers book—even more so Dick Winter’s autobiography, which I feel gives a much better picture of what was going on with Easy Co.

Nikoda – I’m sure I’ll do one or two signings around Seattle. Still, a ways off.... Cookies are _always_ appreciated!

whoops i was using the wrong account, please forgive me

heh i got someone to colab with me, now new question. Would you wanna be one of the advanced reviewers of it when its finished?

btw what kinda deadlines? i didnt know writers had deadlines..

Blogger Eric Nylund said...

Nikoda—really, don’t worry about it now. The book is not going to be out for a while...but, well, Chocolate Chip, of course! (Is there any other kind)?

Robokoff – cool. Good luck with your writing. RE: Deadlines. Yes, you get a novel, comic, or screenplay under contract and the people paying you usually spell out a delivery date in your contract. If you missed the date sometimes they have the right to cancel the contract! That’s real motivation to write! Re: Me reading your writing. See above about having no extra time. Apologies.

I can't wait to read it. Will there be an audio book? I like to listen to them on my daily commute. Have you decided on the final cover art yet?

Hey There,

Just popping in to say thanks for writing some good books, can't wait to read Mortal Coils.

Fourty9er – I truly hope there is an audio book version. I, too, am a big audio book fan (also listen to them on the way to work). This will ultimately be decided by the publisher...and likely based on if there are good enough projected sales of the initial book. Re: cover art. Nothing firm yet. My editor and I have discussed what we want it to look like, but as far as I know no decisions have been made. I’ll post a picture as soon as I have something.

Chris – Thanks!

Hey Mr. Nylund, thank you again for that word count magic you helped me out with. My first sci fi novel will be out by third quater this year. but the funny thing is it's not taking half as long as Mortal Coils. Maybe b'caus my publisher is not one of the big names like TOR, i guess.

Anyhow. Just keep your eyes open for the first ever sci fi novel by an african author. Wish me luck.

Blogger dangerusdave said...

Mr. Nylund, do you actually have any say or influence over the cover art? Like, are you allowed to give ideas or ask for something in particular?

8:42 PM
Blogger Eric Nylund said...

Ugochukwu – Wow! That’s amazing new. All best wishes with the launch of your new book.

Dangerusdave –Most authors are at least asked what they think ought to be on the cover. Then these ideas are turned over to the editor, marketer, and art director who make the call. It is very rare for authors to get cover approval.

Thank you, Mr. Nylund. thank you very much. someone did mention it before but i'm going to say it again. You're such a humble fellow.

ooops. I just realized i'm not the first african author to write sci fi. But I have very high expectations of my book, nevetheless.

Mr nylund, I read the book Ghosts of Onyx and i think it was great, is Mortal Coils going to be the next one and when is it going to hit the shelves?

6:35 PM
Blogger drewbie853 said...

well Mr. Nylund, i heard the interview and Mortal Coils sounds like another good book and it's a totally new storyline, but is there going to be another halo book? personally, out of the 3 authors of the halo books, i think your the top one, shhhhh, haha, but is there going to be another after ghosts of onyx?

Blogger Alex said...

ok ok, i know exactly what you should put on the cover.

its like ninjas... but they're on fire...

subtle, extreme, and short. i like it

Blogger Eric Nylund said...

Alex-- There will be another HALO book. TOR and Microsfot have one more novel under their current contract.

I’d love to write it, too...but it’s up to Microsoft Licensing. They pick the authors, approve the content, and decide when the books get released. At this point, I know as much as you do.

Mr Nylund,
i am an ex scout-sniper from the US Army, and i just wanted to say that your books, "Ghosts Of Onyx" especially have had a great effect on me. having been in combat my self, when Kurt sends his team through the rift and stays behind to take on the covenant...it brought tears to my eyes. i have many brothers and sisters that are still over seas that read your books for a bit of escape for the reality that they face every day.
i am sorry for this being off the topic, buti wanted to get the message across to you. your work reaches far and does alot of good for alot of good people. thank you.
and good luck with Mortal Coil.

Nasty - -thanks, man. Reading feedback like this and knowing I’m connecting with people is one of the greatest gifts a writer can receive.
