Brief Comic Con Report

Things I learned at this year’s Comic Con:
1. My fans continue to impress me. They're the best: polite, articulate—just cool, genuine people.

2. The HALO fan-collective is wickedly smart with guesses about “HALO stuff™”

3. GEARS OF WAR 2 is going to rock. So is the book (although we knew this a year ago, right?)

4. Never try and out party anyone from the New York publishing industry (you will lose).

Huge shout out to the friends I bumped into, some new and some old (in alphabetical order): Alexis, Alicia, Brian D., Brian V., Cliff, Dot, Eric, Frank, Graeme, Greg & Astrid, J.G., Jason, Jim, Joe, Joshua, Karin, Keith, Kuyo, Mark, Nate, Patty, Phil & Kaja, Toby, Verner...and so many others!

Things to make sure happen next year:
1. A noise-reducing Bluetooth headset.

2. Longer signing for fans.

3. Add two more days. I got overbooked. Apologies to everyone I had to cancel on.

4. Hard Rock hotel!

5. Sun screen

Sounds like you had a good time! I got your autograph after the Halo panel on Thursday (thanks again), and I remembered after I left that I wanted to ask if you had any news on your Battlestar Galactica comic you've mentioned before? As for the Halo panel, I'm surprised it took the people so long to get Admiral Cole's first name. A lot of the questions asked had nothing really to do with the Halo story, but there were some good ones. Had fun meeting you and hearing you all at the panel.

Ryan--thanks for stopping by. Meeting you guys is the best part of the con for me. News on Galactica...coming soon. We’re supposed to be doing some big promotion, but after Comic Con to avoid getting drowned by the tsunami of other (bigger) press. I'll post as soon as I know anything.

Funny about Cole. I woulda bet money someone was going to guess Augustus Cole (aka the "Cole train" from Gears of War) as a joke.

Heh - I've watched the video, and that question about how long Cortana was supposed to live was pretty difficult even for veterans of the Haloverse.

The one about Cole was funny. But the real crusher was Avateur's question about the Shield World. We Halo fans have pretty cruel ways of wording questions, hehe. ;)

The multiplayer/XBL questions weren't necessary, though.

It was a really fun panel, I only wish I could have been there.

Next year unsc tropper, gotta make it next year. Comic Con in where the coolest things in the world collect in one spot for a few days. I suspect it wont always be like that...but for now, it’s darn near magical. (Come on, the Cortana question was easy. 7 years!)

Reading your entry and the comments, I immediately thought

"What? It's PRESTON! Come on!"

and

"7 years! Although, that does leave me confused about the post-credits cutscene in Halo 3..."

Looking forward to the Gears of War book. I actually wrote my first play (and screenplay adaptation) for college using characters in planet Sera a couple of days after Emergence Day. Had nothing to do with the game's plot, but I felt it would be good practice, writing something in the bounds of someone else's fictional universe. :)

I'm glad that you got to meet some of your fans, but MAN I wish I could have gone. :(

I personally hope that Gears 2 takes an unabashedly story-heavy turn. Maybe they can make it so that the plotpoints can be skipped by those with more shallow desires to interact in that universe?

Just a random tip, after seeing your "for next year" list... maybe try ThinkGeek.com for some gadgets that will help with some of the downsides of the awesomeness of ComicCon?

Nikoda—you guys should...but book your hotel now (or watch the Comic Con website / hotel section like a hawk and they periodically release rooms for public reservations—even a few weeks before, but that’s pretty dicey).

Angel—can’t really comment on Cortana (as you could have guessed). I think Karin Travis is going to do a great job on that GOW book. Already got a new Bluetooth headset. Probably post about it and one more writer friendly tech goodie soon.
