Mortal Coils Sighting!

I just saw that my forthcoming book, Mortal Coils, is up on Amazon.com! I haven’t spotted it on other bookseller sites yet (please drop me a note if you see it elsewhere and I’ll post the link).

I’m excited about this book. It’s epic: a storytelling arc that covers five novels and a million words. They are the best characters I’ve ever breathed life into. It’s a major leap forward for me, and I can’t wait for readers to get their hands on it. (Pub date is February 2009)

Here’s a sneak preview of the cover copy:

“Nothing interesting ever happened to fifteen year-old orphans, Eliot and Fiona while they’ve lived in the strict, oppressive household of their grandmother.

A chance visit, however, reveals that there is much more to the twins. They are the offspring of an immortal goddess...and Lucifer, the Prince of Darkness.

Now to settle the epic custody battle between these two families, the fallen angels create three diabolical temptations, and the immortals fashion three heroic trials to test Eliot and Fiona.

More than ever they need to stick together to survive and learn to use their budding supernatural abilities...for family allegiances are ever-shifting in the ancient, secret world they have entered.”

When cover art and more details become available, I’ll post them here. Stay tuned!

I know in a previous posts comments you had said that the book would be released in hardcover for libraries and schools, and you had also said something about Amazon but apparently Amazon hasn't listed a hardcover copy. Do you think they will closer to release? If they don't, where would you be able to purchase this epic novel in hardcover?

DD -- I bet it'll show up at some point (and I do see two ISBNs up there). When I next speak to my editor I'l ask and let you know what he says.

halofan 14 -- the cover...now that's an interesting story. There’s been a ton of discussion about the cover, and I hope to be able to share some of it with you all (along with early concepts) to give you an idea of just how dificult and controversial putting together one of these things can be today. If I had to guess, we’ll see a final cover in a week or two. Stand by!

Oooooh! I'm really excited about this! When I get paid this Friday I'm pre-ordering copies for me, Shini, and my mom. She thinks of you and Syne as the nice young man and his nice young wife--she's 70--who signed her book for her and asks me often if anything is coming out soon from either of you. *laughs* This type of story is right up her alley, though.

This is amusing (to me, anyway): When I click on your name on the Amazon page is goes to this list of books by you (mostly Halo) and then in the lower middle there's Beer, Babes, and Balls: Masculinity and Sports Talk Radio (S U N Y Series on Sport, Culture, and Social Relations) by David Nylund and Eric Anderson.

Now to occupy myself until February.

Nikoda—Please give my very best to your mom. And thanks for your support! You all are great.

Yeah, “David Nylund/Eric Anderson”...that's my pseudonym for when I do those non fic sports pieces! (j/k) At end of that “Eric Nylund” Amazon search list you'll also see Tim Power's Three Days To Never. (?!) No clue why that one pops up...

PS: I'll be gearing up to do another audio interview with Syne. If anyone has questions for me, email me or write them up here and I'll pick out a few to answer. The interview will cover mostly Mortal Coils stuff...but _any_ questions would be fair game. Maybe I should just break down and do short audio blogs...

I'm sorry for asking this but does the book have anything to do with halo or something that is related to that like the war?

Good day, Mr. Nylund.

I can't wait to see the cover art. I'm still drooling over the "5 novels" series. Wow!

I might have a question, but I'm not sure if someone else asked you this before. I'm going to give it a try, anyways.

How does one get involved in writing for video games? I've done some research and so far it's been inconclusive.

Do you have to be published (novels, comics etc.) in order to break into the game writing business?

I'm currently researching comic book writing. I'm even working on one right now (it's a Halo comic, but still) and I was wondering how rookies like me approach this kind of business, as it's a bit different from writing novels.

Thank you for your time and your endless dedication to your fans. All best wishes, UNSC Trooper.

Kevin—No, not HALO, or even HALO-ish. A description of the novel is in the original post.

UNSC Trooper--Thanks for all the well wishes. I truly appreciate you guys and your willingness to get excited about a non-HALO story.

I’ll answer your question here rather than the audio interview. First, check out my old post on how to get a job in the Video games industry. It covers most of the basics.

http://www.ericnylund.net/2006/12/jobs-in-video-games.html

I would add that regrettably, writing jobs in this industry are some of the hardest to come by for a few reasons. Although it’s changing, many game developers still don’t feel they need professional writers. It’s a last consideration. Other, smarter devs are recognizing that if they’re going to build a game franchise, they better have a good story and characters. I would stress that if you want to be a writer, you’ll have to have many samples to show. A comic is a great way to start. Getting published would be great, too. Get Bioware’s NWN engine and craft a little scenario to show you know how to write for videos games (part of Bioware’s writer qualification test, btw!). I’d also suggest getting some experience designing/writing on a more complicated game engine—Unreal 2 comes to mind.

Good luck, and as always, if you have questions, you know where to find me.

Kevin--Curious. But I'm not seeing "HALO Mortal Coils" up on Amazon. Can you point me to where this is occuring? Thanks.

Looking forward to reading this, Hope it will not be too hard to get in the UK. But I love the way you did the Halo novels and I am very much looking forward to seeing a non Halo book from you.

Followed by Ghosts of Onyx 2 ?? Lol

Loads of good reading this year though, going through the new Mass Effect Novel and we also have a new Halo book later this year as well.

Thanks, Mr. Nylund. I guess the best thing to do is to just get published, then start working with other people.

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it very much. Oh, and I believe Kevin is referring to a website which accidentally interpreted your mentioning of Mortal Coils at the Halo Panel as "Halo: Mortal Coils". I've seen people on some other forums mistakingly refer to that as well. Fortunately, it was revealed that it was simply a misinterpretation by the website's administrator.

All best wishes, UNSC Trooper.

Sarge Mat--Appreciate the support. Just noted that it’s up on Amazon.com.uk

GHOSTS 2? I’d love to, but Microsoft now picks the subject matter of the next (as yet theoretical) novels, so we’ll have to wait and see.

UNSC Trooper – Also start tagging game developer websites and check them every week to see if something new pops up. Sometimes there are internships and other entry level positions you can apply for. At the very least it’ll be an education as job requirements vary wildly from company to company! Don’t give up!

Thanks for the clarification on the HALO: Mortal Coils. I remember that now.

Someone beat me to asking if it was the next HALO novel. I guess I'll have to be a smartass some other time then ;)
I'm looking forward to this novel though!

*looks at j.a.f. a little surprised*
In the ten years I've known you I have never known you to need an excuse to be a smartarse. I believe I miscalculated your level of fandom here. You're actually being...respectful. Now, Eric, if only you could bottle up whatever it is about you that makes this happen and sell it. You could get a ton of sheep and all of them could have their own TV. ;o)

Adjustantreflex –thanks!

Nikoda—I do have some of this bottled...it’s aging like fine champagne and has to mellow a bit before I can uncork it. Too volatile otherwise; might blow up in my face :)
