Proof Pages
The author painstakingly goes through looking for anomalies and errors and makes any alterations required.
And yes there are still errors.
I am, however, delighted with the look and feel of these proofs.
I’ve included a few pictures so you can see too. (The crop marks indicate the final page dimensions).
In a few weeks it gets bound and sent off to reviewers. If I get a few I’ll have a contest here to give away a couple.

Getting closer! Exciting!
Maybach! Is this pre-war or post-revival Maybach? I would kill for the Exelero. Too bad there's only the one and it was made for a tire manufacturer. Then there's the whole $7.8 million price tag...The new 62 Landaulet looks interesting. Odds are I'll be getting the new Camaro convertible before the Maybach, though. *laughs*
It's the Exelero in Mortal Coils.

but this version is a custon, four-door, limo verson...and just a _tad_ faster :)
Wow. I hadn't seen the typeset version. Pretty cool!
It must be exciting to see it all coming together.
I haven't posted for a while (password trouble...), but just came to ask a question:
Any word of an international release for Mortal Coils other than through Amazon? I know we have trouble getting books quickly here in Australia and was just wondering if you had any plans, or will they be handled by local publishers?
Looking forward to reading it :)
Syne--Exciting? Yes! It's like a riding a rollercoaster...just without all the safety equipment. I'm so glad you like the design. I'd love to show you the rest!
CP--welcome back! TOR books doesn’t have exclusive rights in Australia...so while they can ship books there, as of yet, there is no specific Australian publisher. Let's both keep fingers crossed and hope someone buys them. :)
I'm looking forward to it! Of course, since it's only the first book in a series, it'll leave us waiting for more...
This is completely unrelated but Syne's picture is so pretty!
Nikoda, you just became my favorite of Eric's fans. ;>
Your manga image is pretty darn swanky, too. Cool graphic.
Speaking of neat pictures, have you seen his new author headshot? Pretty snazzy.
Aww. Thank you, Syne! That's incredibly flattering coming from you.
And, yes, I did notice the new pic. I thought it looked very back of book worthy.
im so happy i get to reed another eric nylund book soon! halo or not you can tell a grate story (im actually happy its not another halo book... no one ever understands when you tell them your reading a halo book. they think its a strategy guide or something?) this book sounds sweet too!
A contest....ooh, sounds fun.
Yesterday I was thinking about this and I though, "Wow it would be cool to see what a book in progress looks like." Then I realized that the winner of such a contest would not only get to see what a book in progress looks like, but they would get to read the entire book. I almost lost it when I realized that.
Jeremy—thanks! Yes, it will leave you waiting, but I’m on schedule to turn in the sequel to my editor when Mortal Coils comes out, so you won’t have to wait too long this time. : )
Nikoda—Syne’s pic. Yes, I’m a very lucky guy!
Bretw—Appreciate the support! You could always wrap the cover over another book, like Canterbury Tales, around the HALO book you're reading...works wonders!
Dangerusdave—yep. Now what kind of contest should I set up? Something fair. Easy to judge, too (no fan fiction contests please! Not while I’m in the middle of writing my own book : ) ) Hmmm....
I think an essay about why exactly we will be picking this book up might work. And it'll most certainly give you a heck of a boost in self esteem. And a way to make it easier to judge would be to make grammer count.
Going with the artistic theme, how about a contest for fan "cover art" for Mortal Coils? Kinda like fanfics but with less reading. All you have to do is look at it.
Cool suggestions. I think I know how I'm going to handle this. Stand by...still have to acutally get extra galleys :0
This query of mine may be a little related but I'll go on anyway.
I'm just curious on how many times can an author submit his or her work to a publisher especially if it keeps getting rejected and you want that piece of work to really get published?
Stand by. Pfft. You do realize the levels of impatience when it comes to That Which Is Utterly Freaking Cool you're dealing with here, right?
;o)
arthur: I'm curious. Are you talking about sending the work to the same publisher again and again? Or am I being blindsided by the nuances of the English language?
Nikoda—I always appreciate the magnitude of your enthusiasm for my work! Sadly, no word yet on the galleys...so we’re _all_ in “stand by” mode. :/
Arthur—if you mean how many times can you send a specific work into a publishing house like Del Rey or TOR, then the answer is once. Do not re-send it or change the title to get a “second” chance. They usually end up being read by the same person. Make sure that you have the latest version of the Guide to the Literary Marketplace so you can send it to all publishers who might be interested. Be patient. And most important, start your next project!
To nikoda: Yup. That's what I mean.
And thanks, Mr. Eric. Now I know what to do once I'm done with my novel, and I'm looking forward to buying Mortal Coils this Christmas. :)
Arthur—good luck with your writing!
Thanks, sir! I'll need every ounce of good luck. :)
