Mortal Coils Reading Sample and Cover

I’m excited to announce that my latest novel, Mortal Coils, published by TOR, will be available in bookstores on February 3, 2009.

Nothing exciting ever happened to fifteen-year-old orphans Eliot and Fiona. A chance encounter, however, reveals they are the offspring of a goddess and Lucifer. To settle the epic custody battle between these two immortal families, the gods fashion three heroic trials, while the fallen angels create three diabolical temptations to test the twins....”

To read a sneak preview of the novel, download the first nine chapters as a PDF (82 pages).

To see a larger view of the cover click on the thumbnail above.

For more information, see the Mortal Coils page on my site.

Thanks for your interest and support—it means the world to me.

I refuse until I see the contest winners!

You can't expect me to just read nine and then take a break!

For shame.

As the others mentioned, the cover truly rocks the socks.

Thanks everyone. One day I’ll post about how this cover got on Mortal Coils. It’s a good story, or...at least instructive in the publishing porcess.

Dragonzord—I’ve posted the ARC winners in the “Win a Mortal Coils ARC” blog entry. They are Ryan V. and Alex P. Six more to give away, though, before the end of the month.

Shame i didn't win one of the ARC's, yet. I'll keep my fingers crosssed the next couple of weeks.

The cover is good and will get people to pick up the book. It doesn't give me the feel of the book, however. It looks like it's going to be some period piece, with traditional devils and the occult. Nylund readers know you write sharp modern fantasy and slick space science fiction. I think this book deserves a larger audience and hope it gets mentioned in the context of things to read after finishing Harry Potter or American Gods. There are a lot of things Mortal Coils does better, in my opinion, than either of those best-selling phenomenons.

Thanks, guys. And thanks Mike for the favorable comparisons to those fine authors.

RE: the cover. There was much “vigorous” discussion about the cover at TOR. It comes down to where it’s going to get shelved in bookstores and who we’re trying to attract to pick it up. A lot of surprisingly important people weighed in on this issue...

I think the cover, however, looks “tough” enough to appeal to a wide swath of my HALO readers. I also think it’ll attract that ephemeral “Teen” audience. Go into any bookstore and you’ll see a section—sometimes labeled, sometimes not—for Teens, and take a look. Some of those covers make the MC cover look tame in comparison. I think it’ll fit in nicely there, too.

Time will tell.

For your information, it's 01:45AM right now.

Those 82 pages has to be around some of the best 82 pages I have ever read. That was brilliant. Just... speechless. I hope you break through in big ways, Eric, with this one you ultimately deserve it.

It was worth the wait. Oh my, this was good. Grandmother is lethal, my favorite so far. Reminds me of my oldie, too.
