New Manuscript In

I just e-mailed the manuscript of ALL THAT LIVES MUST DIE to my editor at TOR (this book is the sequel to MORTAL COILS for all those that have asked if this is a HALO novel).

The manuscript is a 10% longer than the first book in the series ~ 220,000 words. Printed out in Courier font and double spaced, that’s a stack of 1100+ pages. Thanks goodness for Kinko’s/FedEx online printing where you can upload a file and have them effortless print it for you!

While I’m waiting to get feedback, I’ve got half a dozen new writing projects to tackle...including one very special novella.

Good god the trees. This totally makes me want to be smarmy and create a People For the Ethical Treatment of Plants. We'll have protests at Staples and hold huge conferences at the Beef Council. Our trademark image will be a sobbing chicken hugging a tree. Everywhere we go we'll bring a modern dancer dressed in a brown leotard with plastic leaves on their arms. They'll dance out the suffering of the broccoli. It will be glorious.

Yes. It is very sad about the trees. Luckily my editor at TOR and I work in electronic copies (the 2 copies I printed out were for my last readers).
And really, this is insignificant to the paper used to _print_ all those books! Everyone should be using e-books. Syne just got a new Kindle 2, and I’ll blog all about the wonders of it soon.

That's where I'm torn. I love my bookshelves of books. Especially the books from the 1800s/early 1900s. On the other hand, just driving up I-5 past Everett and seeing that saw mill there makes me environmentally self-conscious. I think I could get used to the idea of a Kindle type interface, though. I'll just balance it out with my continued collection of old books. It's fun getting odd looks from people in the book section at Goodwill. *laughs*

THAT THINGS HUGE!!!!!!!!!!
10% bigger and 1100 pages, that's the size of THE STAND in page count. But the word counts about close to 1/2 million words, yours is close to 1/4 a million, congrats!
I just finished a story thats almost double to my others.
I have a kindle also, it's really neat, the world should go into E-books or at least find a substitute for paper. I think a few books have done that.

I could never figure out what a novella was.
My guess is multiple books in one volume, like a collection is multiple short stories or poems in one volume.
Can't wait for books.

You should weight that thing to see how heavy it is, Stephen King did that with THE STAND and it was 12 pounds, I weight mine sometimes and they're 1 pound. Ha ha... that's still big for me.
I bet that things going to be at least ten pounds.
1100 pages, Oh my goodness...

First off, happy father's day!

Secondly, well done on FINALLY finishing. :P Sorry, someone here has to keep you in check.

I'm with Nikoda. I've been itching for a Kindle (and now dos)for a while, I love the feeling of a real book. I love having them line shelves to show people how smart I am. I've digitized every other format of entertainment I own but I just can't bear the idea of ousting my favorite thing in the world.

Besides, how would I lone copies of things to other people if I had a Kindle? HMMM.

And novella? Well it must be some rather LARGE franchise your intimate with. I wonder which that could be? haha

Dakota - A novella is essentially a long short story. I think the SFWA or whatever says that a novella is a story between 20,000 and 40,000 words.

Some of the most famous stories in the world have actually just been novellas: Animal Farm, Anthem,The Old Man and the Sea, Heart of Darkness...Kafka wrote novellas, Steinbeck wrote novellas, Hemingway...and now Nylund.

No pressure there to deliver something great now, Eric. :)

Thanks, I kept looking over what a novella was. I had three guesses from what I found.
1. A book that is only for audio tape.
2. Multiple books inside a volume. Each one was a novella.
3. A short book.

Number 3 was right, thanks.

That's about a decimeter thick, I think that's what you call it, which is about the lenght of your hand when you have it in a C format, like when you're holding something.

That's massive, and looks delectable. I just finished reading Mortal Coils, and can't wait to read the sequel. I'm going to get an ARC by hook or crook that's for sure. Paxington Institute here I come.

Jeremy – I would be shocked if it came out in 7 months. Traditional publishing just does not move that fast.

Rakrois 747 – Wow, I’d love to go down to Mexico City and visit, but I never seem to have time to travel. Heck, I can’t even get arm twisted into signing books at the local stores in Seattle!

Abby—Thanks for the kind words for Mortal Coils. So far my Secondary Readers, Agent and (most important) my Editor are really loving ALL THAT LIVES MUST DIE. Stand by....

I love your writing, I just cant get enough of it! Your books Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: First Strike and Halo: Ghosts of Onyx are the best books I've EVER read. Keep up the good work, and good luck for your future books that you might write.
