Super Quick Update

Apologies for the lack of blogging, but life got busy (even by my standards) and regular blogging got shoved down on my list of things to do right near “Learn Esperanto.”

Ok, so in no particular order...

1. Edits are done on ALL THAT LIVES MUST DIE. Yay!
2. A sneak peak at the mass market cover for MORTAL COILS is up on Barnes & Noble.
3. The collected trade edition of Battlestar Galactica: Cylon War is coming out soon, too.

More updates as soon as I catch my breath!

Woohoo! And I'm sure that now that we're heading into holiday season, things are going to really slow down. ;o) The cover looks good, though! I think I see a potential Christmas present with the BSG project. Yes, indeedy.

Good to hear that you are doing well. Hope the family is also doing well.

Was reading Frankie's posts in HBO about goodies due later this year that were by your hand -- ever a pleasant thing to know.

:)

Looking forward to everything,
~Angel

The ATLMD news is the most exciting, in my opinion. But that's just me. I was actually wondering aloud just the other day about where the book stood and stuff. Nice to know it's been going along nicely.

And the cover is pretty cool. It's not at all what I had in mind, but that doesn't make it bad, you know? I was actually trying to think of what I would put for a cover and I couldn't come up with anything--you've truly written a book that is hard to classify, at least through art. :)

Thanks everyone!

Nikoda. Actually the Christmas season in publishing is very slow. Publishers are people too : ) and half of Manhattan vanishes after Thanksgiving.

Angel. I think you’re going to like the bit I did for the HALO anthology. One of my favorite characters in the HALO universe.

Hi Patrick. Good to see you out here on blogger.

Dangerusdave—I’ll be updating all the details as they come in for ATLMD. Your support is always appreciated. The cover...yeah, it’s a constant struggle.

Alright, now, Mistah hype-train, no need to be cruel! lol. Now you got me all frustrated that it ain't already in my hands! Just kidding, of course. I'm looking forward to whatever Halo fiction comes my way -- one of my friends said that he doesn't look forward to anything Halo-related unless it's a new Nylund novel. Everything else he suspends judgment on until he actually plays it.

Hmmm I hate to leave negative feedback here, but if I was just an average Joe browsing the aisles, your cover would come off as a romance novel Eric.

I have no place to say it, but I agree with Dave that it's not the cover I expected what with all the mythology and fantasy involved. Heck I'd settle for just a bold logo of the (trying to avoid spoilers here) place they go. Or (Elliot's fun toy) and (Fiona's fun toy) just laying on a desk...

Just trying to give some constructive input I suppose.

One side note, is the stuff that Angel is referring to the Halo Legends anime shorts? Did you have any involvement on that?

And I want to guess here and say your favorite character is CPO Mendez.

I think there is a scientific law that proves that anything with the words "Eric Nylund" printed on it becomes instant gold. I'm sketchy on the formula at the moment, but it ought to come to me soon.

@Dragonzord:

I agree about the cover, it just doesn't click for me, I think the original fit better. (Mine now has a crease though, :( )

The project that Angel mentioned is the next Halo book; an anthology with works by a bunch of different authors. (Nylund, Buckell, McLees, and Traviss are the announced names thus far I believe.) I think all the Legends stuff is done overseas... No official word on that last part, mostly a hunch.

And I can't remember where, but I *believe* he has said his favorite character is Halsey... I can't find it, so don't take it to heart... But I'm pretty sure I've read that somewhere.

@Eric Nylund:

Can't wait to read ATLMD as well. MC caught me by surprise and after reading the excerpt on your site, I went out to buy the book immediately. Really interested to see how things evolve!

The cover in my point of view doesn't look romantic, (being a strict no romance reader, I can tell if somethings romance or not, unless it had some cover that had nothing to do with the book, AKA Twilight) but it doesn't click, I like the other one better.

Now see I actually liked the cover because it was completely different from what I expected. I don't think it's the best cover for a book ever (that would go to the trade paperback of MC) but I think it does a fair job of teasing and drawing prospective readers in. That being said, there are things that I would personally change about it, but I think that with an entire marketing department behind the decided cover with (presumably) a lot of market research behind them...Like I said, it's not the best book cover ever, but I think it'll do what it needs to do--which is sell copies of the book. Right?

RE MC cover
That’s the correct theory, at any rate, DD. Also, an author’s input on cover design is very rarely implemented. (Sometimes you’ll even see covers that have scenes/characters never in the book!)

RE my favorite HALO character. Yes, at one point in time I did say my favorite was Dr. Halsey. Whose to say I don’t have a new favorite, though, now? : )

Wait a minute, hold the phone!

This was listed as number one but for some reason this didn't hit me until just now--edits are done on ATLMD? So in essence the book is done, save for the printing?

Then that's surely the most exciting news here.

Done? Yes and no. Most of the major edits are done. But now the manuscript will be sent to a professional copyeditor. The manuscript is marked up and sent back to me, and I spot any errors or omissions the copyeditor made (this is done on paper. Then that gets sent back and “typeset” i.e. the electronic version of the manuscript gets laid out into a print ready format where it looks like the final printed book. In that step errors can be introduced as copyedits are transferred by hand into the electronic format (this is a part I wish publishers would make digital). Then the book is done...apart from getting a cover made, marketing, sales meetings, doing interviews to promote....

I’ll be talking about the entire Mortal Coils series soon. So stand by...

Holy cow!

I would think that you would just have to go over an edit the manuscrpit 2-3 times and send it off, I didn't know you have to give it back and forth.
Well, your books are 1000 pages now, so I could completely understand that.

Very good cover ;) would you write a next book to bring the story "Halo: Ghosts of Onyx" forward?

Thanks Laura and Andrew : )

Dennis--I've stated many times that I'm always up for another HALO novel (especially a sequel to GHOSTS), but those discussions are up to Microsoft's HALO Franchise people.

Cover looks good, but what's the difference between this edition coming out and the one released a while ago with the demons on the front cover?
